Title: June 5, 2052: “Santa Cruz County Voters Pass Measure R to Add Rail to Trail”
With Highway 1 clogged and smothered beyond hope despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent on widening, voters yesterday approved a measure to rebuild the rail line that was scrapped 30 years ago after passing what has been called Measure D. Climate activists yesterday hailed the victory as a desperate attempt to minimize the dire impacts of our scorching planet. “If only Measure D had been defeated in 2022, we wouldn’t have to rebuild the 32-mile coastal rail line that was taken down at great expense,” one campaigner said. Monetary opposition to rail lamented having to share the “greenway” with clean, fully electric light rail. A veteran Greenway enthusiast complained, “Now they’re going to build big train trestles on our beautiful highway.
