Aston Gardens presents silent auction to help disabled veterans, May 22 – Parkland Talk

Residents of Aston Gardens at Parkland Commons are actively preparing for what activities coordinator Ellyn Fishbach hopes will be a hugely successful fundraiser for the non-profit organization Vets help heroes.
Fishbach said 12 self-employed residents meet with her weekly to plan and create inventory for the silent auction. Residents of assisted living facilities will also join the effort.
“I am their mentor, but this is a resident-driven project and like other fundraisers we have worked on, the success of our silent auction is due to the hard work of our residents,” Fishbach said.
All proceeds from the May 22 event will go to training service dogs for disabled veterans – a charity that seems to be a strong motivation for Aston Garden residents.
“Last month we had a visit from Vets Helping Heroes service dogs. The ballroom was packed! Standing room only,” Fishbach said.
She added some of the baskets worth bidding on, including a Le Creuset soup pot and other high-quality kitchen items. Royal Dalton porcelain and Madame Alexander dolls are some of the other goods up for auction.
Residents and their families donate these items or create them themselves in the case of a resident who makes jewelry.
Since March, the Fisbach Services Outreach Committee has planned a few unique features for their silent auction, including a candy table held by the residents’ grandchildren.
Aston Gardens children’s staff will also be selling sweets at the event, where residents run the silent auction from start to finish.
The auction is anonymous. The event is open to the public and free. Payments in cash or by check are due upon receipt of the items.
The silent auction is scheduled for Sunday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Aston Gardens at Parkland Commons at 5999 N University Drive.
