Playing in honor of his friend and colleague at Brewster Academy, Bostonian Dasonte Bowen stole the show with 32 points, propelling his team to a 100-94 victory, in an all-star game combining players from MIAA schools and NEPSAC.
âIt’s a big event,â said Bowen, who started for O’Bryant in eighth grade and transferred to Brewster from Worcester Academy last year.
“I played in [the Beantown Slam] the last three years and it’s always great to come back and show love to the people I started with. I just wanna be able to live [Clarke] and put for the city like he did, so it’s personal now. I have to do it [to the highest level] for him.”
The action opened with a boys’ game comprised of all stars from the Boston City League.
In a competitive affair between very familiar players, Boston’s English junior full-back Mekhi Dedrick took over down the stretch, sealing a 72-69 victory with a finish and 1 in the dying seconds.
âI just knew we only had 11 seconds and I had to go get a bucket,â Dedrick said of the end game.
âI haven’t played in front of an audience for a long time. It was really fun because a lot of people that I was playing with and against, I know them well, so it was really fun to participate and everyone wanted to win in the end.

The All-Star Game followed, featuring a mix of personalities from the MIAA ranks and preschoolers.
With the game in play, head coach Vinh Bui (who now runs the Noble & Greenough Junior Girls College program and runs the Shooting Touch AAU program) turned to Norwood junior Megan Olbrys.
The 6-foot-1 forward took over with a few finishes and 1 in streak, finishing with 11 points to propel Team Vinh to a 63-57 victory.
âAs soon as this was announced, there was a huge buzz,â Bui said, referring to the original plan to host the outdoor Beantown Slam at Fields Corner.
âI think it’s great for the kids and for the community. Especially in the city there has been a lot of hardship due to the pandemic so it’s just a beautiful thing to have the kids here and the community supporting them.
