“We are creating a safe space for people with disabilities,” said Nate diskint, director of CoHome, a Morristown residence for adults with developmental disabilities.
“For the 60,000 people who come to the event, a number of them will have a disability,” Diskint explained on Friday. This could include visitors with autism, Down’s syndrome, and developmental issues.
“It could be overwhelming for them,” Diskint said.
Anyone in need of a break is welcome to relax in the tent, have a cold drink at the water station, and escape the noisy crowds. Volunteers in green T-shirts will be ready to lend a hand. CoHome residents will also be in attendance, along with residents of other group homes.
A sensory bin full of funny things will be available, to calm the anxiety of those who need it. Water pearls are a proven favorite, Diskint said.
“We’ll have a whole planter full of them. They look like marbles but look like Jell-O, ”he said.
The idea of CoHome was adopted by the organizers of the festival in Morristown Partnership, which is providing the tent, Diskint said. Atlantic Health and Furniture Consultants Inc. (FCI) provides sofas and chairs. J. Esposito Builders will install all Sunday morning.
“It’s really cool that the Morristown Partnership wants the fair to be disabled-friendly, and Atlantic Health really wanted to push that too,” Diskint said.
He thanked the FCI for the seats and praised Joe Esposito.
“Frankly, this is just a mensch,” Diskint said. “He was there to swing a hammer at us. Not only does he send his guys out who do the work, he’s also there at work.
