Interview highlights – Saadia Zahidi
With an evolution towards almost exclusively virtual work for almost a year, there has been an increase in working hours that is very different from what we have seen in the past, and it is, in part, due to lockdowns. , in part because of the pressures facing businesses. And it’s leading to a larger crisis around health and wellness and the need for companies to very consciously rethink the kind of work environment they virtually create.
Most generations think they can make sure that the next generation will be able to do better than they will: there has been this sort of ‘social mobility staircase’ that has been around for some time. . This has collapsed, especially with regard to the technological change of the last five years.
Combine that with the disruptions currently occurring due to the pandemic-induced recession. And combine that with all the changes underway in terms of the transition to a more sustainable and greener economy. All of this, together, disrupts all those paths that people were previously supposed to be able to ensure that the next generation does better than them, that in their lifetime they are able to do better than before.
Today we don’t really have any working systems. We have some pretty archaic systems that were designed around the time of the first industrial revolution: education systems where a certain number of years of schooling was supposed to take you until the end of your life. This is simply no longer the case. So we need a key sector or industry in the social economy, a skills sector that offers lifelong learning.
The “jobs of the moment”
According to Cognitive Center for the Future of Work, new roles will emerge over the next decade that will be at the heart of businesses and employees around the world.
