Padma Awards 2022: From folk artists to painters, meet the winners recognized for their work in art and culture

President of India Ram Nath Kovind conferred the highly revered Padma Award to 54 personalities on Monday. Given in various disciplines, this year the list includes 4 Padma Vibhushans, 17 Padma Bhushans and 107 Padma Shris. No name has been announced for Bharat RatnaIndia’s highest civilian honour.
Here are some of the winners who have been recognized for their outstanding work in the field of art and culture.

Famous Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa was posthumously awarded Padma Bhushan for her leading role in promoting and recognizing the Punjabi culture.

The President presented the Padma Shri honor to Durga Bai Vyam for her outstanding artistic work. Based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, she is one of the greatest artists in Pardhan Gond who has worked to regenerate the tribal art form. His paintings are mainly rooted in his tribes and their myths, drawing inspiration from folklores and myths.

Kaajee Singh ‘Vidyaarthee’ has been recognized in the art field for his work in promoting cultural music. Founding President of Samskriti Samrakshan Samsthaan, he pioneered the growth of the Shree Maadal instrument and traditional Maruni dance.

Well-known folk singer Ajita Srivastava received the honor for her work in preserving, conserving and propagating popular folklore from ‘kajli‘.

An expert in doll and toy making crafts, Konsam Ibomcha Singh was honored for his outstanding work in preserving the century-old art of doll making of the Meiti community in Manipur. Singh, who has participated in various national exhibitions, is also a recipient of the Manipur State Prize.

A living legend of Swang, Bhagat, Nautanki, Rasiya and Raaslila folk traditions of North India, Pandit Ram Dayal Sharma has been bestowed in the field of art. Current Guru of Samai-Khera Gharana, he uses his art to raise awareness of various social issues.

Gosaveedu Shaik Hassan Sahieb was awarded posthumously in the field of art. An accomplished scholar and Nadaswaram player, he was the first Asthana Nadswara Vidhwan of Sree Seeta Ramchandra Swamy Devasthanam, Bhadrachalam. He starred in several temples in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The President also conferred the honor on R Muthukkannammal for art. She is the sole living representative of Sadir dance in India and serves as a repository of knowledge on the history of the dance form, Bharathanatyam. Over the past 75 years, she has given more than 1,000 performances.
