Shows and Movies We’re Excited to Stream in September – Manila Bulletin

From local folklore and epic tales to the life story of icons

September is proving to be another great time for streaming with upcoming shows and movies set to hit various platforms this month. If there’s one theme we see this month, it’s telling the tales and legacies of beloved entertainment icons, literary works and folklore. We saw this year with the “Game of Thrones” returning to our screens through the prequel series the “House of Dragons”.

If you’re as excited as we are, check out some of the movies and TV shows we’re excited to stream in September.

‘Blond’

‘Knives Out’ star Ana de Armas becomes the iconic Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s upcoming film about the late Hollywood actress. Dubbed “Blonde,” the biopic is the film adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ book of the same name. The film, directed by director Andrew Dominik, also stars Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, Julianne Nicholson as Gladys Pearl Baker and Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy, among others.

Blonde will premiere on the platform on September 28.

‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’

After the announcement of its coming in August 2021, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is finally upon us. The series is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, featuring the forging of the iconic rings and more. It is set a thousand years before the events of JRR Tolkien’s epic high-fantasy novels that became The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movies.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will be available to stream on Prime Video starting September 2.

‘Elvis’

The 2022 musical biopic from Warner Bros. Pictures about the “King of Rock and Roll” is coming to HBO Go this month. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, “Elvis” features Austin Butler as music icon Elvis Presley. Joining Butler in the film is actor Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker, the singer’s manager, who chronicles Elvis’ brilliant career in the music industry, from his rise to fame to the people he has encountered.

“Elvis” will be part of HBO Go’s media library starting September 2.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ season 5

The television adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel is about to premiere its fifth season. The award-winning series “The Handmaid’s Tale” follows June Osborne, a fertile woman who has become a servant (child-bearing slave) in a dystopian world where infertility is on the rise.

The fifth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premieres September 15 on HBO Go.

‘Mga Kwentong Epik: Maria Makiling’

Based on a Filipino graphic novel, “Mga Kwentong Epik: Maria Makiling” is a local animated show retracing the story of the famous diwata. It features Bodjie Pascua as the narrator with actress Ryza Cenon as the voice behind character Maria Makiling.

“Mga Kwentong Epik: Maria Makiling” will be available on Netflix from September 16.
