Virginia Tech’s Unique Scavenger Hunt Kicks Off Monday

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) — An unusual tradition for Virginia Tech students began at midnight Monday morning, leading hundreds of students on a mysterious journey where the destination is unknown.
“There was an opportunity for that, an empty space in the life of Virginia Tech,” says alumnus Emmet Eckman. “There are enough people who are weird enough and excited enough for it, and it was missing so they made it happen.”
“It” being the VT Hunt.
Throughout April, hundreds of people will participate in the Puzzle-Solving Scavenger Hunt taking place on the Virginia Tech campus and virtually.
The VT Hunt was started by an unidentified group, as has been the tradition for its years of existence. This is not a school event, but rather planned by a group with an interest in the school and the community.
Participants don’t even know what prize they’re competing for, getting involved for the challenge and thrill.
The event kicked off at the stroke of midnight Monday morning where hundreds of students gathered on campus to get started.
For senior puzzle solving Tilden Fernandez, beauty is in her presence.
“It’s really great to see that he doesn’t have to exist, and he doesn’t exist for a productive reason. You won’t get jobs, you won’t get promotions, you won’t get not a better mark in any class. You just have to do it because you want to do it and you think it’s cool that it exists.
While for others chasing the prize like Sarah Gudelis, it’s all about the unknown.
“I think the mystery aspect is really fun. You do the whole thing without really knowing where it came from or what it’s about. You just do it because you want to.
Added a newborn lore item to pass down to future Hokies.
“It’s important because it’s the unnecessary fun that was missing,” Eckman says. “It’s something you can do to take a break before the final, challenge yourself, have a good time and be absorbed in the mystery.”
